Symptoms of Depression

Depression is more than just feeling sad. It affects how a person thinks, feels, and functions in daily life. Symptoms can vary from mild to severe and may include emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioral changes.

Emotional Symptoms

  • Persistent sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Irritability, frustration, or anger
  • Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or shame
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

Behavioral Symptoms

If these symptoms last more than two weeks and interfere with daily life, it may be a sign of major depression. Help is available—talk to a mental health professional, doctor, or counselor.
